As a superhero, the characters in the MCU franchise must do anything for the good of many people. Their reputation and credibility as heroes are at stake.
For many heroes in the MCU, their decision comes at a price. They have to sacrifice their lives to save others or to reverse the actions caused by criminals.
Not all films in the MCU end with the death of a superhero who will end their character arc.
However, those who sacrifice their lives for the greater good, leave behind friends who mourn their deaths and sometimes face the consequences of their actions. Here are 7 of the toughest sacrifices to make in the MCU franchise.
1. Ant-Man enters the Quantum Realm (Ant-Man and the Wasp)
In the film Ant-Man (2015), Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) agrees to participate in an experiment that reduces his body to the size of an ant. In Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018), Scott Lang grapples with his responsibilities as a father and as Ant-Man.
This time, he teams up with Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) to find Ghost. Ant-Man makes the risky decision to enter the quantum realm to collect the quantum particles needed to help Ghost.
Lang knew the risks associated with the quantum realm, but he was the only one to return to the quantum zone while the Van Dyne Family monitored his status. Scott Lang saw firsthand how Janet Van Dyne was trapped in the quantum realm. The end of Ant-Man and the Wasp where the Van Dyne Family disappears and Ant-Man is trapped in the quantum zone.
2. Wanda gave up her perfect life (WandaVision)
In the series WandaVision (2021), we can witness the life of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) at Westview. There, Wanda lives with her husband, Vision (Paul Bettany) where they spend their days working and inviting their co-workers to dinner. In each episode, Wanda begins to question the world around her.
Wanda faces a seemingly perfect reality. When she realizes that none of this is real, Wanda frees the residents of Westview from her spell thus sacrificing her chance to live the life she wants.
His actions had dire consequences. At the end of the series, Wanda familiarizes herself with The Darkhold, a cursed book. This is related to the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).
3. Spider-Man erases history (Spider-Man: No Way Home)
Spider-Man (Tom Holland) may have defeated Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), but he has become a public enemy. Instead, Mysterio released a confessional video in which he claimed that Spider-Man attacked him and revealed that Spider-Man was Peter Parker.
In Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Peter asks Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to help cast a spell to make everyone forget that he is Spider-Man. Doctor Strange’s spell backfires and brings in other villains and Spider-Man from different universes.
Towards the end of the film, Doctor Strange tries his spell again, and this time it works. Nobody remembers Peter Parker. Peter Parker lost his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) after the Green Goblin killed him, and he lost his friends who no longer remember him.
4. Groot made himself a protector (Guardians of the Galaxy)
A team is formed consisting of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Groot (Vin Diesel), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), and Gamora (Zoe Saldaña).
Together they search for a powerful orb that is owned by Ronan. Ronan refuses to hand the orb to Thanos and flees to Xander. Peter Quill and his team go to Xander to defeat Ronan.
When the Dark Aster ship crashed, Groot used its branches to protect his friends. Groot suffered life-threatening injuries that resulted in his death. Rocket planted some of Groot, and he was able to grow back.
5. Natasha risked her life for the Soul Stone (Avengers: Endgame)
Soul stone is one of the six infinity stones. However, in order to retrieve the soul stone, one of the people had to sacrifice their life in Vormir. Initially, Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) had accepted that he would sacrifice his life to get the stone. Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) rejects him because Clint has a wife and children he will leave behind.
As the two try to stop each other, Natasha ends up pushing herself off the cliff. While all of the Avengers mourn Natasha’s death, the events after Avengers: Endgame (2019) still haunt Clint.
Throughout the Marvel movies, Natasha and Clint are friends. One of the films even reveals that one of Clint’s children will be named after Natasha. In Hawkeye (2021), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) travels to New York City to kill Clint to avenge her sister’s death.
