I’ve talked about how America is fueled by our exhaustion numerous times.
This country requires us to be exhausted. Mentally, physically drained to the point where we are so tired we have no energy to even consider the possibility that none of this is normal. But every once in a while, it hits you right? Every once in a while the reality becomes so overwhelming and intense you can feel it sinking in, resting inescapably in the pit of your stomach.
The Uvalde school shooting has been one of those times for me.
The slaughter of those nineteen children and their teachers was an undeniable, brutal reminder of the fact that in the United States, the cruelty is the point. What other conclusion is there to come to, when lawmakers who have the power to stop shootings like these instead attended the NRA convention that following weekend in Texas? The convention that the organization couldn’t even bother postponing. An event where Donald Trump literally danced on stage, and Ted Cruz got to go home and barbecue for the memorial day recess with his family after his speech while his constituents bury their babies.
We hear a lot about how this nation is a failed state, and frankly nothing has made that more clear than Uvalde and the aftermath. Sure, shortages of baby formula due to corporate greed and negligence are a pretty clear indicator. The unresponsiveness of our lawmakers to the will of the people is another. But the Uvalde police, standing outside of that school threatening desperate, terrified parents with arrests and tasers as they could hear screams and gunshots is a failure of our institutions that will stay with me forever.
America, we’re right on the edge. This is not simply an empire in decline. It’s crumbling at lightening speed and leaving maximum collateral damage in its wake.
It feels almost like we’re just existing in this rubber band. Pulled, and pulled, and pulled until something finally snaps.

We cannot send children to school without fear they’ll be slaughtered. Uterus’ are about to become property of the state in at least half the country. Parents are being forced to determine whether they pay to put food on the table for their children, or their medication. People can’t afford to keep a roof over their head anywhere in this country as Wall Street buys up entire neighborhoods. Over one million people were sacrificed as collateral damage to the stock market in the midst of a deadly pandemic. Meanwhile, politicians like Ted Cruz tell pretty little stories almost immediately after 19 children are murdered in cold blood about how this is the safest, most prosperous country on earth.
This is not normal.
The now mainstream right wing is begging for civil war and if something doesn’t give, they’re going to get it. The level of division and inability to acknowledge reality we’re dealing with is incompatible with a functioning society, and yet our lawmakers are too morally bankrupt, craven, and corrupt to even acknowledge how dire the situation is getting as — thanks to their refusal to do anything about climate change — the world quite literally burns.
You cannot vote your way out of societal collapse.
Get organized and fight, because time is running out.
