A rare US military offensive in northwestern Syria has captured a senior ISIS leader, according to a US-led anti-ISIS group.
A U.S. National Security Agency official said no U.S. military personnel were injured and no damage was made to aircraft involved in the attack.
“Coalition forces captured the Daesh leader during an operation in Syria on June 16,” Operation Inherent Resolve said in a statement. “The detainee is considered to be a veteran bomb maker and organizer who became one of the group’s leaders in Syria.”
A US official told ABC News that the name of the ISIS leader arrested in the attack was Hani Ahmed al-Kurdi and described him as an active coordinator of ISIS activities.
“Despite its humiliation, Islamic State remains a threat. We persist in its victory. The operation last night, which removed the ISIS leader from the battlefield, demonstrated our commitment to the Middle East’s security and the lasting victory of ISIS, “said General Erik Kurilla, commander of the US Central Command, in a statement issued. ABC News.
U.S. military ground strikes in northwestern Syria are dangerous because they are being carried out in the western part of the US military base in eastern Syria in areas of violence or the presidential regime. Syria is ruled by Bashar al-Assad.
“This project is well designed to reduce the risk of contract breach, especially anything that could harm civilians,” the OIR said. “No civilians were injured during the operation, or any damage to the Coalition aircraft or property.”
