Halfway through the month, it would be hard to call March anything but memorable.
Jr. bantamweight Roman Gonzalez returned after a year out of the ring to hand one of the best flyweights in the world a beating one fight after a disputed loss to Juan Francisco Estrada. Jr. welterweight Jose Ramirez also got back to the winner’s circle after a rough loss to Josh Taylor last year. Ramirez was effective in winning a decision over two-division former titlist Jose Pedraza.
And then there was Leigh Wood’s comeback knockout of Michael Conlan. The almost absurdly cinematic contest was the sort of contest that makes new fans and reminds the stalwarts why they never leave.
Through the rest of the month, we will see several big names trying, as Ramirez did, to rebound from their very first defeat.
Avoiding “and 2”
A big part of the festivities in boxing are the pre-fight introductions. Every fighter likes to hear “and 0” after their win total. Old adages about fighters not really learning their craft until their first defeat carry truth, but the reality today is each loss means more because there are fewer wins to disguise them.
Through the rest of March, three prominent former champions will enter the ring for the first time to the tune of “and 1” as in all those wins and one single defeat. They will do their best to avoid loss number two.
Kiko Martinez vs. Josh Warrington: At featherweight, we have one of boxing’s more unlikely beltholders. Kiko Martinez was done. Years removed from his last quality win, he was there to help Kid Galahad along to bigger things. Martinez had other plans and the leather to make them happen. He defends the IBF belt against a Warrington who never lost it in the ring but lost without it. Mauricio Lara lit Warrington up and their rematch ended before it really got started. Warrington can return to the title ranks with a win here. He can return to winning for the first time since 2019, period.

Teraji battled like hell to avoid defeat. Masamichi Yabuki battled harder, stopped Teraji in the tenth, and left with the WBC belt. It was special stuff and they’re about to do it again. Yabuki doesn’t have to worry about the burden of more than one loss. Teraji has to worry about the abyss of consecutive defeats.
Petchmanee CP Freshmart vs. Wanheng Menayothin: Cheeky fans had some laughs relative to the undefeated mark of Floyd Mayweather when Menayothin’s long run as WBC champion at 105 lbs. took him past 50-0. Petchmanee CP Freshmart took the 0 to end the punchline. Menayothin isn’t getting any younger and a loss could be the end for him.
