Powder coating is a method of dry coating used to produce a durable finish that is most generally used in metal items, vehicles, & even motorcycle parts. It gives a layer of protection that is tougher & stronger than conventional wet paint. Preparation is a critical issue in the process of powder coating since the final product might be damaged by any foreign particles. Depending on the surface, cleaning is performed by a number of procedures, which typically rely on the scale of the substrate & the type of debris.
Cleaning is usually achieved by a chemical or mechanical operation. While chemical processes usually allow the use of chromates (which are harmful to the environment), other ways of preventing the use of these chemicals have recently been established. The cleaning procedure is meant to eliminate foreign elements & strengthen the bonding between the powder & the substrate as a pre-treatment. There are many powder coating techniques.
Powder coating is usually applied to metal using an electrostatic gun (or Corona Gun). The powder is positively charged & then sprayed on the metal. Then the activated powder is sprayed out; it is actually drawn onto the metal by the electrostatic charge. It is heated after the metal is covered, which melts the coating into a strong protective shell on the top.
The process of heating the powder to the melting point is called cross-linking. The powder melts & then chemically reacts to form an even stronger compound than its original form. This process requires a particular temperature & set amount of time to be successful & create a full bond to the metal.
