BISHOP, CA — California’s largest wildfire of the year broke out in Inyo County on Wednesday afternoon, with the blaze turning into a major incident that continues to force evacuations, threaten structures and close roads Thursday.
Dubbed the Airport fire, the brusher was reported at 12:40 p.m. in the Owens Valley, east of Bishop at Airport Road and East Line Street.
Crews worked nonstop through the night and as of late Thursday morning the blaze had scorched 3,900 acres with zero containment, according to Cal Fire San Bernardino/Inyo/Mono Unit.
Crews continue to battle the inferno from the ground and air: 432 personnel were assigned to the firefight as of Thursday morning, according to Cal Fire.
Wednesday night, fire crews were working to protect Caltech’s Owens Valley Radio Observatory, located on ancestral lands of the Big Pine Paiute Tribe. The facility is one of the largest university-operated radio observatories in the world and is used for research in radio astronomy and astrophysics, according to Caltech.

As of Thursday morning, no structures had burned, although 150 remain threatened, according to Cal Fire.
Evacuations remain in effect at the observatory, White Mountain Research Center, and the town of Big Pine, east of Highway 395. Evacuees were being directed to the Bishop Senior Center at 682 Spruce St.
The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office reported the following road closures on Wednesday: East Line Street, Airport Road, Poleta Road, Warm Springs Road, and Collins Road.
“Avoid the area,” the sheriff’s department said.
On Thursday morning, Caltrans District 9 also advised that state Route 168 was closed from the junction of U.S. 395 in Big Pine to Death Valley Road.
There was no estimated time on when the highway will reopen.
The fire was burning a few miles south of the Eastern Sierra Regional Airport, which is a main transportation hub for Mammoth visitors. According to an airport spokesperson, the blaze was not on airport property and Wednesday’s scheduled flights were uninterrupted.
According to Cal Fire’s Thursday morning report, the blaze is moving south, away from the airport.
The National Weather Service reported that the Bishop area was under a wind advisory until 9 p.m. Wednesday. North winds were forecast at 25 to 35 mph, with gusts from 40 to 55 mph, according to the agency.
Weather conditions were forecast to ease on Thursday, with winds of 6 to 10 mph.
There was no word on what sparked the blaze, and no injuries were reported.
