HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The story of George Washington chopping down the cherry tree might be a myth, but the Hudson Valley’s very own George Washington really can’t tell a lie — the truth is set in stone.
Commuters waiting patiently to turn onto Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck may have felt the sudden sense that a patriotic presence was looking out for them during the rush hour trek. It turns out they might be onto something. That feeling that the very first president is looking over your shoulder is something the God-fearing souls of the Sound Shore have experienced for more than a century.
It wasn’t until August of 1901, when a resident of Orienta first noticed a boulder bearing a striking resemblance to the face of George Washington at the spot he had passed through Mamaroneck over a hundred years before, that the cause of the vague sense of presidential presence was first identified, according to a Patch Neighbor post from Mamaroneck historian Peter Fellows.
