GLENCOE, IL — Authorities said an employee in the service department of a Glencoe car dealership last year embezzled more than $50,000 from the business before his boss confronted him last fall.
Terrance Stailey, 54, of Glenview, was arrested this week and charged with felony theft in connection with allegations that he stole customers’ cash payments while working as a service officer at Autohaus on Edens, 1600 Frontage Road.
Prosecutors said his scheme started in February 2021 and continued until September 2021, when a manager discovered that repair orders had been improperly left open or payments had been improperly charged to extended warranties.
Assistant State’s Attorney Rowland Edwards said Stailey would pocket cash payments for orders and use credit cards belonging to other customers to cover up the crime.
Stailey’s boss also discovered he was storing customer credit card information, expiration dates and ZIP codes in his calendar, Edwards said.

When confronted by a manager at the business on Sept. 8, 2021, Stailey “stormed out of the meeting,” the prosecutor said.
“[Stailey] later texted [his boss] that he was sorry and never meant for this to happen, and to let him know if he was going to pursue criminal charges,” Edwards said.
An Autohaus representative reported the theft to police on Sept. 13, 2021, and the dealership’s insurance company conducted a forensic accounting of its books to determine how much Stailey stole, the prosecutors said.
Defense attorney Lisa Lopez said Stailey worked for another area dealership for more than three decades before starting the job at Autohaus. She said he has lived in Glenview for the past 18 years and currently acts as a father to a teen stepson.
Stailey, who appeared in court for the first time Friday in Skokie, was ordered to be released ahead of trial in exchange for the $1,000 cash portion of his bond and an agreement not to return to the car dealership or contact his former boss.
Cook County Associate Judge Anthony Calabrese said a cash bond was necessary because the allegations describe an “extended scheme” of continuing theft.
