Telecommunications and network company Ericsson is strengthening its Radio Access Network (RAN) portfolio for solutions related to 5G rollout and communication service provider sustainability goals.
The addition of Ericsson’s RAN portfolio allows for significant energy savings but with a capacity increase of up to 10 times.
The first product introduced was the Radio 4490. This dual band radio can save up to 25 power consumption and is lighter in weight than current products.
Ericsson claims Radio 4490 is compatible with almost all radio sites globally because it supports the main FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) band, which is widely used by operators for implementing 5G networks.
In addition, Ericsson also launched a high-power dual band radio version, 4490 HP. This version allows 50 percent more power output than current radios. Both radios employ passive cooling, reducing power consumption because they don’t require a fan.
Both of Ericsson’s new RAN radios are Cloud RAN-ready.
Ericsson’s Head of Product Area Networks, Per Narvinger, said, “Ericsson continues to expand its RAN portfolio with more solutions for smarter, leaner and more sustainable 5G networks.
“Our new innovation will further optimize 5G sites, both specifically built and implementing Cloud RAN,” he said.
With 5G rollout accelerating worldwide, carriers are ready to switch to 5G Standalone to drive consumer and enterprise use cases.
By introducing 5G, it means adding spectrum and hardware. This is where Ericsson products will support increasing 5G capacity while cutting power usage.
Additions to Ericsson’s portfolio include:
– Easy to install Massive MIMO AIR 6428 64T/R for medium band, with 400MHz bandwidth for efficient sharing, in a 25 kg radio that can be carried by one person.
– Fully integrated 4602 multiband antenna – 398mm wide, designed with high wind resistance and site construction requirements in mind.
– The new generation of industry-leading quality interleaved AIR 3218 with industry-leading quality, enables Massive MIMO launches without adding to the visual antenna footprint.
– Expanded Deep Sleep mode software for new radios and Massive MIMO portfolio, consuming 70 percent less power per radio during low traffic hours.
– Coverage Boost is a versatile 5G carrier aggregation software that provides 60 percent wider coverage for TTD (Time Division Duplex) medium bands when compared to dual connectivity.
– The device also supports RAN Compute and Cloud RAN platforms.
These new products are powered by the new generation of Ericsson Silicon, which features reduced footprint, more power-efficient multiband, and broadband capabilities for long-range radios and Massive MIMO radios.

Meanwhile, Head of Ericsson Indonesia, Jerry Soper, said that sustainability is Ericsson’s goal. “Our new energy-efficient solution products allow customers to save energy while managing the high data traffic growth of 5G networks,” he said.
