If you didn’t go to bed as early as the undersigned last night, you may have already received something from Hogwarts Legacy. The game set in the Harry Potter universe was extensively revealed yesterday.
Hogwarts Legacy is a new open-world role-playing game set in the Harry Potter universe, but in the late 1800s. Long before Harry, Hermione, and Ron arrive on the Hogwarts Express, players will have the opportunity to enter the magical school as a student. It’s set in the 1800s, which means there’ll be a whole new history of magical lore to uncover, especially since Albus Dumbledore wasn’t born until 1881.
All About Hogwarts Legacy
Hogwarts Legacy was announced at the PS5 showcase in September 2020, but the game has been delayed until 2022 due to controversies surrounding the involvement of the book series’ original creator JK Rowling. It will now be released over the holiday season.
Avalanche Software, which has previously worked on Disney spin-off titles such as Cars and Toy Story (but not the Just Cause series), is collaborating on the project with Warner Bros. Games’ Portkey Games.
With the game set to debut this year, we’ll be bringing you all the latest Hogwarts Legacy news as it breaks, so check back often for updates on how to enroll in Hogwarts in 2022.
Release Date
While the release date for Hogwarts Legacy hasn’t been confirmed, Warner Bros. Games has stated that it would be released in “Holiday 2022.”
It will be available on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS5, PS4, PC, and, rumor has it, Nintendo Switch.
The game was supposed to come out in 2021, but it was pushed back to 2022 with only the promise that it will come out after Fantastic Beasts 3, which opens in theaters on April 8, 2022.
You’ll play as a fully customisable character who enrolls late as a fifth-year student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Hogwarts Legacy tale. You’re also the keeper of a “ancient secret that threatens to split the wizarding world apart,” as it turns out. You have the ability to manipulate a mystery ancient magic, and you’ll need to work with others to figure out why this lost power has suddenly resurfaced, as well as those who are attempting to control it.
This story takes place in the late 1800s, decades before the world of Hogwarts as we know it. While Hogwarts Legacy will not be a straight translation of the novels or films, it will be “anchored in Wizarding World lore,” which means you won’t see Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, or Hermione in this adventure.
You’ll “embark on a risky journey to learn a hidden truth of the wizarding world,” according to Warner Bros. Games, in addition to living the life of a Hogwarts student. In this brand new, completely unwritten adventure, developed by Portkey Games and Avalanche, there is a terrible adversary to be defeated.
“It’s an honor to work on such a fantastic series, and the team is committed to create a realistic Wizarding World experience that both Harry Potter and RPG fans will appreciate,” said John Blackburn, Avalanche Studios’ studio general manager. “What makes Hogwarts Legacy so unique is that it allows players to immerse themselves in a new story with intricate characters and, of course, magic.”
Hogwarts Legacy Gameplay Features
As part of a special March PlayStation State of Play, we were given to a 14-minute Hogwarts Legacy gameplay walkthrough that highlighted many of the game’s concepts and principles. You can see it above, and we’ll break down the essential beats in the section following.
This is an open-world RPG that allows you to explore Hogwarts and its environs, including Hogsmeade and the Forbidden Forst, on foot, by broom, and possibly even by hippogriff.
You’ll be able to choose your Hogwarts house at the start of the game, and then play as a fifth-year student at Hogwarts, taking classes like Charms, DADA, Herbology, and Potions. In between classes, you’ll have the opportunity to explore Hogwarts, which, as you might expect, is full of secrets, enchantments, and other mysteries and puzzles.
The Room of Requirement will also become a frequent stop, serving as a sort of base where you can catch up on your studies while you’re not in class. In fully configurable vivariums, you’ll be able to grow plants, manufacture potions, and even collect magical monsters.
Outside of Hogwarts, there are lots of mysteries to solve, which will put your magical powers to the test. You’ll be assisting Professor Figg in the investigation of a possible goblin rebellion.
You’ll also want to visit the stores and other sellers in Hogsmeade to get supplies, clothing, and other things. There are additional mysteries and dangers in the areas on the edges.
In terms of battle, you’ll use a combination of spells and potions to combat your opponents. To truly demolish your adversaries, you’ll need to learn the Shield Spell, Stunning Charms to counterattack, and others to chain up strong spell combos and even Finishers. There are thousands of spells to learn that can help you establish your own attack style, so there’s much to accomplish before you start experimenting with potions that can boost your strength. If that’s your thing, you’ll be able to conjure plants to aid you in battle.
Because this is an RPG, your character’s evolution is defined by talents, upgrades, and skills. You can level up your powers by earning skill points from various activities, and then focus on being the witch or wizard you want to be. There’s also loot, created, and bought items to be found.
You won’t be doing it alone, though, since Hogwarts Legacy includes a variety of student companions for you to encounter along the way.
However, you will not encounter Harry Potter in Hogwarts Legacy. The game takes place quite a while before the events of that world. But that doesn’t mean you won’t recognize many things. Judging by the State of Play, these are the elements you need to know about the game.
Create Your Own Character
In the various Harry Potter games you could only work with the well-known character. But he is not in Hogwarts Legacy. Instead, you create your own character, who starts his or her adventure as a young student. You have a lot of choices to create your unique character. The image below shows a bit of what you can expect in that regard.
Explore Hogwarts in Hogwarts Legacy
One of the interesting elements of Hogwarts Legacy is that as a Harry Potter fan you now have the opportunity to explore Hogwarts at your own leisure. It is of course a bit different than you are used to, because the game takes place for quite some time before the books and the movies. However, you will start to recognize a lot of things. And apparently the school is very big, so you can walk around and recognize things.
A Big World
But the world of Harry Potter is of course bigger than just the school. In that respect, it’s nice that you also have a large open world in Hogwarts Legacy. You can use these on a griffin or a broomstick. That way you can encounter a lot of different environments. The game uses different seasons. So the world looks different in the spring than when the snow covers it in the winter.
Play With Different Spells
Magic has always been an important part of the world of Harry Potter and you can see that in Hogwarts Legacy. During your adventure, you can learn various spells or choose to tame beasts, which then fight by your side. That way you really have different ways of playing and it can ultimately make it a game that you play more than once.
Truly a Single Player Game
Often a developer tries to pull a trick, causing it to extend the length of the game. This happens regularly by adding online components to a game. And that’s not always something that works well. In that regard, it’s good to see that the Hogwarts Legacy developer isn’t doing that. They let it be known that this adventure in the Harry Potter world is a pure single player experience.
This is When Hogwarts Legacy Comes Out
Hogwarts Legacy does not have a fixed date yet. So you have to keep reading your Harry Potter books for the time being. The game is slated for a 2022 holiday release. That is somewhere in the period from the end of October to December. A release in November wouldn’t be too bad in that regard.
