You might be wondering, “Why the hell would you go five days without eating?”
The short answer: it was part of a health kick. Weight loss was only a small part of my reasoning, though it surely became a huge benefit.
A friend had evangelized fasting over and over. I’d read a few studies on the enormous health benefits and how rat lifespans increased when exposed to fasting.
And so I gave it a shot.
The first three days were hell
I only drank water across the five days. There was zero eating. I added a daily vitamin powder to my water just to be safe. It had no calories.
Additionally, I dialed down my exercise (I typically work out 6 days a week.)
I quickly felt like a bear preparing to hibernate. Ravenous and insatiable hunger permeated my body. It was mostly my fault. I fed into the hunger (no pun intended).
On day 3, I saw someone eating a steak taco and felt like I was hallucinating.
The steak taco whispered to me, “Hey there Sean. 10 of my taco friends are lonely. They’re in that Taco Hut across the street. Go pay them a visit.”
Near the end of the third day, I stopped feeling hungry. The change was sudden and strange. I went from worshipping food to forgetting it existed.
I still felt a wince of hunger in the morning — simply because it was part of my routine. But other than that, the hunger wasn’t bad on day 4 and 5.
The decline in hunger is caused by ketosis — which kicks into effect after your liver is depleted of glycogen. Your body switches to burning fat for energy and ceases releasing ghrelin, the hunger hormone.
Fasting also increases autophagy, the process of removing cellular waste from your body. Yoshinori Ohsumi won the noble prize in 2016 as he documented this effect. It can help with longevity and the prevention of cancer.
