BRICK, NJ — Edwin Basterl was the kind of person who led a mostly quiet life. He served in the military. He had friends. He liked to eat out. He worked helping to improve people’s smiles.
The one thing Basterl didn’t have much of, however, is family. When he died March 29 at age 84, he was the last member of his family.
Basterl’s funeral is Thursday. The only people expected to be in attendance are a handful of members of the Symanski family. Hannah Symanski would like to change that.

“He did not have any family or friends other than my mother and husband and my sister,” and their children, Symanski said.
She’s hoping that a veterans group might be able to come to the viewing and service for Basterl, who is set to be laid to rest Thursday morning.
“It is something he would have loved,” she said. “It breaks our hearts thinking that really no one would show up and that it would just be myself and my family.”
Basterl was born in the Bronx but lived most of his adult life in Brick Township, according to his obituary on the Weatherhead Young Funeral Home website.
He worked as a dental assistant, and he had served in the U.S. Army and in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1969.
“Ed loved going to all kinds of restaurants and would really enjoy the variety of foods that were offered,” his friends wrote. Ed had a warm and kind heart that we will dearly miss forever.”
The viewing is set for 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Weatherhead Young Funeral Home, Mantoloking Road in Brick. Basterl will be buried at Brig. General William C. Doyle New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown at 12:30 p.m., according to the obituary.
