GLENSIDE, PA — Since 2016, audiences far and wide have been entertained with a unique blend of hypnosis and improvisation thanks to the touring show HYPROV: Improv Under Hypnosis, a joint creation of master hypnotist Asad Mecci and comedian Colin Mochrie, star of the long-running television show Whose Line Is It, Anyway?.
On Friday, the combo improv/hypnosis performance will grace the stage of the historic Keswick Theatre in Glenside, where local audiences will get a chance to watch, and even take part in, this unique brand of entertainment.
The program is the brainchild of Mecci and Mochrie, who met after Mecci reached out to the Whose Line star asking if he would interested in partnering up for something that had never been done before.
Within a couple weeks, the duo was performing the show together on the main stage at The Second City comedy cabaret in Toronto, the city where both Mecci and Mochrie live, and it immediately became a hit.
“We had no rehearsal. We just jumped right in,” Mecci told Patch.

Both Mecci and Mochrie spoke to Patch in separate interviews Wednesday as the two prepare to perform at the Keswick Theatre on Friday.
Mecci, who said he got interested in hypnosis due to his studies of martial arts, visualization techniques and other psychological and spiritual type practices, said he initially brought hypnosis to the corporate world and later on traveling cruise lines.
He eventually desired to bring his skills to the entertainment world and so he enrolled in courses at The Second City to help hone his craft.
After Mecci teamed up with Mochrie for HYPROV, he said the show began enjoying widespread popularity due to its ability to make audiences laugh, but also because it enables real folks from cities and towns where the troupe visits to become involved in the action.
“People were so enthusiastic about it,” Mecci said of the show. “It’s Whose Line, but it’s Whose Line on steroids.”
Mecci called Mochrie a “pure improv genius.”
Mochrie, in speaking with Patch, said when he was initially pitched the idea, “it sounded terrifying.”
But he quickly came around to the concept.
“I always enjoyed being out of my comfort zone,” he said. “I realized I couldn’t be farther outside of my comfort zone than with this show.”
Mochrie said HYPROV has done “amazingly well” over the years, and that he is very pleased audiences have taken to it.
“It’s a fun show, it certainly isn’t something you’ve seen before,” Mochrie said. “It’s good for the whole family.”
Audience participation is only open to folks 18 years of age and older, although families and children of all ages are welcome to attend the show.
Mochrie said he has performed at the Keswick Theatre before, and that he always enjoys visiting the Philly region.
“We’ve always had a great time [here], great audiences,” Mochrie said.
For Mecci, who has never been to Glenside before, the prospect of getting to play at a local historic theater in an old part of the country sounded exciting.
Mecci said the show did take a brief hit during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when it had to be put on hold from around March 2019 until it resumed in the fall of 2021.
Mochrie said they toyed with the idea of doing it virtually, but “there was no way.”
Audience participation is key, so there was really no realistic way to make it happen remotely.
The format of the show is simple: around 20 volunteers from the audience are brought up on stage to be hypnotized. Mecci and Mochrie whittle it down to about the best five or six participants, and from there laughter ensues as Mochrie comes in and begins to do improvisation with the local folks under the power of hypnosis.
“The show is absolutely hilarious,” Mecci said. “Just imagine Colin Mochrie improvising with some random people from Glenside.”
Mochrie may sing a duet with one of them, he might pretend that he’s engaged in a wedding proposal with another, or he may improv that he’s interviewing the person for a job whose description is dental hygienist for sheep, Mecci said with a laugh.
“The people on stage are kind of thrown into [different] scenarios,” Mecci said. “It’s wacky, it’s funny.”
Mecci said he relishes the opportunity to share the stage with Mochrie.
“I always tell people I have the front row seat to the best comedy in the world,” he said. “I’m right there watching him do his thing. Colin is just a master improviser. I always look into the audience and just see people keeled over with laughter.”

Mochrie admitted that he first came to the show with misconceptions and doubts about hypnosis. But he soon became a believer in the power of subliminal suggestion.
“In a show like this you really need trust between everyone,” he said. “I trust Asad. He really knows what he’s doing. And he’s the best at it. It’s a really strong partnership.”
