Bill Haney is not too concerned by the prospect that he will likely not be by his lightweight titlist son’s side for the most important fight of his career.
Devin Haney is set to defend his WBC lightweight title against IBF, WBO, and WBA champion George Kambosos in a full 135-pound unification bout June 4 at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia. The fight will air on ESPN.
Haney’s father, who has also been his chief trainer and manager, was not able to accompany his son to Australia earlier this month because of a visa issue. The Australian government makes it difficult for convicts who have served 12 months of prison time to enter the country; the elder Haney was put behind bars in the early 1990s, before Devin was born, for a drug conviction.
The chief trainer for the 23-year-old Haney will be Yoel Judah, the father and trainer of former champion Zab Judah.
Haney, admittedly, has gone through a gamut of trainers throughout his career, and according to his father, that approach was all done with a certain purposiveness in mind. The fact that Haney has experience dealing with instruction from a variety of trainers puts Bill Haney’s mind at ease.
“Devin is the kind of race car that any one of them (trainers) can drive it at this point in time,” Bill Haney said on The DAZN Boxing Show. “You know what I’m saying? You have Floyd Sr., Virgil Hunter, who was very instrumental during this camp. You got Mike McCallum, who’s at home with me right now. You have Billy Giles, the former coach of Hector Camacho. There are a lot of guys that don’t know that we’ve been working with him (Giles) since Devin when he was young.

Bill Haney had high praise for Yoel Judah.
“Yoel Judah, we’ve had nothing but respect for him. He’s the perfect guy – I don’t like to use the word, go to war – but I would say in any kind of hostile environment, Yoel is the kind of guy you want to go with,” Bill Haney said.
“He’s a fighter’s coach. He believes in the fighter wholeheartedly. I can’t say enough about him.”
