Liverpool embarrassed Manchester United once again at Anfield on Tuesday night, swatting their bitter rivals aside like lower-league opposition in a 4-0 win that allowed them to keep maximum pressure on Manchester City in the Premier League title race.
United travelled to Anfield without Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese tragically lost his son on Monday, and the stadium stood to applaud for the forward in the seventh minute, with many in attendance singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ as a message of support to the former Real Madrid man and his partner Georgina Rodriguez.
On the pitch, Luis Diaz had already put the Reds with five minutes played, continuing his decent start to life as a Liverpool player. A well-worked move was finished by the Colombian after Mohamed Salah had found him to finish.
Salah then scored the first of two of his own goals, ending his drought on the end of a Sadio Mane assist, with the Senegalese rightly taking a lot of the plaudits for an excellent cutback.
Diaz had the ball in the net again before half time, though his strike was chalked off and Liverpool would have to wait until midway through the second half for their third goal. This time, Diaz was the creator and Mane finished past a helpless David De Gea.
Salah piled more misery onto Manchester United in the 85th minute with Liverpool’s fourth.
The Reds end the night top of the table after the win, though City do have a game in hand to play which could see them restore their narrow one-point lead at the summit.
Liverpool 4-0 Man Utd
A masterclass from Liverpool showed the gulf between the two teams. Diaz, Salah and Mane all got a goal and assist each, with the Egyptian bagging another late in the game. Liverpool still dream of a quadruple and United are left to lick their wounds.
Hannibal with a heavy challenge on Henderson, then Fernandes goes in late on Alexander-Arnold. United clearly frustrated after being outclassed by Liverpool.
A quick Liverpool counter sees Robertson win the ball off Hannibal and he quickly finds Jota who in turn feeds Salah, and the Egyptian lifts the ball over the onrushing De Gea and into the net for his second of the game.
United fans have had enough
With less than 10 minutes to go, most of the travelling United fans have had enough and are headed for the Anfield exit. Can you blame them?
That goal has killed any fight United had left in them. Liverpool look so comfortable in possession and cause chaos in the United defence every time they go forward.
Any chance of a United comeback is over now. A brilliant delaying of his run see Mane make enough space to fire home from just inside the box.
United are looking dangerous and on the counter through Sancho, he finds Fernandes, who in turns tees up Elanga, but Liverpool get men back and make the block.
First shot on goal
It’s taken 55 minutes but Manchester United have had a shot on target. Not that it was dangerous, as Sancho’s tame strike is saved by Alisson.
With United having an extra man up top now, Liverpool are trying to draw United forward to exploit them on the counter. That said, there is still zero potency in the away side’s attack.
We are back underway at Anfield, and United have made one change with Jadon Sancho on for Phil Jones.
Liverpool 2-0 Man Utd
It’s been a masterclass from Liverpool at Anfield with Manchester United unable to live with Jurgen Klopp’s men. An early goal from Luis Diaz set the scene, before Mane and Salah combined to double the lead before 25 minutes had gone. United have offered nothing in attack and can barely get on the ball, such is Liverpool’s dominance.
De Gea save
A long range effort from Luis Diaz goes straight to De Gea. All too easy for the home side.
Rare foray forward
Manchester United give themselves some respite as Rashford gets on the end of a long ball, but he can’t control the ball and Alisson easily collects.
The difference between these two teams is enormous. Half an hour in and United have had just 22 percent possession and have barely been outside their own half. It’s just a waiting game till Liverpool’s third comes.
Another brilliant goal from Liverpool. A perfect pass from Mane over the United defence finds Salah and he makes no mistake to double the lead.
It’s all Liverpool
This looks like it’s going to be a tough night for Man Utd, as Liverpool are completely dominant. Even when United get the ball, the are barely able to string two passes together.
Support for Ronaldo
Liverpool fans stand and applaud in support of Cristiano Ronaldo who recently lost his newborn son.
That didn’t take long. Liverpool have opened the scoring though Diaz and Salah races down the right and puts a perfect cross to Diaz and he blasts home from close range. This could be a long night for United.
Alisson shows his composure with the ball at his feet as the Liverpool goalkeeper, coming under pressure from Bruno Fernandes, performs a Cruyff Turn and wrong foots the Manchester United midfielder.
