Manchester United’s new permanent manager Erik ten Had has reportedly secured support for the signing of James Ward-Prowse. The Southampton midfielder could be brought in this summer.
As reported by Metro, Ten Hag intends to increase his player options in midfield. The Dutchman has compiled a list of potential players for Manchester United ahead of his move to Old Trafford.
James Ward-Prowse appears to be on the Ten Hag candidate list. He has made over 300 Premier League appearances for Southampton. The 27-year-old has also been linked with a move to Man Utd in recent times.
The Red Devils actually had expressed interest in signing West Ham United star Declan Rice. However, the club based at the London Stadium wants more than 150 million pounds or around Rp. 2.7 trillion in exchange for the departure of its star player.
The cost is not a small number for MU. On the other hand, Ward-Prowse is only valued at around £75 million by Southampton. No wonder the England national team player can be used as an alternative recruit by the Red Devils.
Ward-Prowese is a figure that is no less impressive. He is famous for his ability to score goals from free kicks.
The 27-year-old footballer has even collected 14 free-kick goals in the Premier League. This record makes him only four points adrift of the legend David Beckham, who holds the title as the top scorer of free kick goals with 18 goals.
For information, Manchester United is experiencing a trophyless season. They were thrown into the sixth position of the Premier League standings. Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino supports Erik ten Hag’s assessment of James Ward-Prowse. He said the player was more than just a dead ball specialist.
“It’s very interesting to see James Ward-Prowse linked with a move to Manchester United,” Cascarino told The Times, as reported by Metro.
“At the age of 27, the Southampton midfielder is entering the prime of his career. If he is not content to be a player at a club, now might be the time to (take) a big step.”
“Ward-Prowse (a player who) is much more than just a set-piece expert. He is brilliant at keeping the ball and helping his team dictate the game,” said Cascarino.

Cascarino also admitted that he would not be surprised if Erik ten Hag was interested in using the services of Ward-Prowse at Old Trafford next season. “I can understand why Erik ten Hag might (would) like him (Ward-Prowse),” said the 59-year-old former player.
James Ward-Prowse also spoke about his future with Southampton. This English-born player seems to be unfamiliar with the speculation involving him and other big clubs.
“It’s the first time I’ve faced such speculation, so it’s a different challenge,” Ward-Prowse said last summer, as reported by the Manchester Evening News, Tuesday (3/5/2022) then.
“I was also trying to recover from a knee injury at the time, so I had some problems at a crucial time in the season.”
“At that time, there was nothing to think about for me. I am very happy to be here (at Southampton); to be part of this club is really special. I am happy and very proud to continue this journey,” he said again.
Not only strengthening the midfield, Erik ten Hag also plans to bring in a new striker next season. The reason, Edinson Cavani will run out of contract at the end of the season. The futures of Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo are also still in the dark.
Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez has been identified as a potential target for Manchester United. Ten Hag has reportedly prepared a tempting offer for the Nerazzurri, namely to give Anthony Martial in exchange for hiring the services of Martinez.
Martinez is indeed a sharp striker in Serie A. He is recorded to have collected 21 goals from 45 matches. He also managed to score against Liverpool in the second leg of the Champions League last 16 in early March.
Martinez could be allowed to leave the San Siro if the value desired by the club is met. The team that sits in second place in the Italian League standings have signaled their intention to sell the player for a price of 60-70 million pounds.
