Mark Zuckerberg Charitable Foundation Donates IDR 631 Billion to Tackle Climate Change
The charitable foundation of Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan, The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, is donating USD 44 million (equivalent to Rp. 631 billion) to support efforts to tackle climate change.
Most of the money will be used for efforts to capture carbon dioxide that has accumulated to be harmful to the atmosphere and oceans, as one of the efforts to tackle climate change.
The climate crisis can only be solved by stopping pollution and warming on Earth. In this case, the steps taken are to remove carbon dioxide due to human activities that produce pollution to damage the planet.
This strategy has also attracted billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates as well as technology companies like Microsoft and Stripe.
Carbon removal technology, recently received millions in funding from technology companies. Moreover, technology companies have been facing intense scrutiny over how they exacerbate the climate crisis.
Last year, the charitable foundation Chan Zuckerberg Initiative awarded $23 million for carbon removal technologies and $10 million for a fellowship program in the Gates Breakthrough Energy climate initiative.
Channeled to UCLA
Later, half of the new funds from Zuckerberg and Chan’s charitable foundation (USD 21 million/Rp 301 billion) will be channeled to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Carbon Management Institute.
The campus is known to develop electrochemical processes to cut CO2 emissions from cement production which accounts for 8 percent of the global carbon dioxide population, roughly four times the emissions of the aviation industry.
Separately, UCLA will spend part of the money building an electrochemical flow reactor at the Port of Los Angeles to remove carbon dioxide from seawater.
The oceans absorb a quarter of human CO2 emissions, which is detrimental, as it turns water more acidic, dissolves crab shells and contributes to the death of coral reefs.
Funds Used to Develop Technology for Extracting CO2 from the Air
UCLA will also use the grant to develop new technologies to extract CO2 from the air. One of them is air capture technology which is used to separate the amount of CO2 from other elements in the atmosphere.
UCLA hopes this technology can reduce energy intensity and costs using a modular electrochemical system. If successful, it will result in a stream of CO2 of reduced concentration. The captured CO2 can still be used in industrial processes to reduce emissions, including making concrete.
As the technology is still in its infancy and is expensive to deploy at scale, the development of new markets for captured CO2 could lower costs and encourage more investors to support the technology.
Previously, the Mark Zuckerberg and Chan foundation channeled USD 20 million to a chemical company called Twelve. Twelve is trying to develop products made with captured CO2, for jet fuel and auto parts, ostensibly to replace fossil fuels commonly used in the manufacturing process.
