Nearly eight months since Max Muncy’s left elbow was damaged in a collision at first base in Game 162 of the 2021 season, the Dodger infielder is now on the injured list with the elbow still not quite right.
Muncy, who missed the entire 2021 postseason but has appeared in 41 of the Dodgers’ 45 games this season, was placed on the injured list on Saturday with left elbow inflammation after not seeing action the last two games.
“I’ve been grinding through some things, but unfortunately been trying to put my body out there on the line and just need to take a step back for a couple of days and just reset and give my body a chance to heal up,” Muncy said.
The Dodgers also on Saturday moved reliever Tommy Kahnle to the 60-day IL, selected the contract of veteran outfielder Kevin Pillar, recalled right-handed pitcher Michael Grove and optioned right-hander Ryan Pepiot, who started for the Dodgers on Friday. Kahnle, originally placed on the IL on May 17, is dealing with right forearm inflammation.
Muncy, who hit the fourth-most homers in the Majors from 2018–2021, is batting .150/.327/.263/.591 with three home runs through 41 games this season. The powerful infielder was candid about his struggles this season, but wouldn’t say the elbow was the cause of them, despite a torn ligament that has barked through different parts of the season.
“Maybe subconsciously it’s been there, maybe not quite getting through the ball like I’m used to, but it’s not something I’m thinking about,” Muncy said. “I’m not going to use my elbow as an excuse. It’s just I haven’t played good.”
Muncy said the elbow irritation has flared up when his body has collided with netting or the hard ground making a play. He will take a few days off from baseball activity. Surgery, he said, has never been an option, and he is hopeful that the injured list stint will be short.
“This game’s really tough even when you’re going good, dealing with a lot of stuff mentally,” he said. “When it’s going bad, it amplifies it more. It was really tough, but thankfully this clubhouse is great. These guys pick me up.”
Muncy’s absence opened the door for Pillar, the LA native now in his 10th big league season. Pillar, a premier outfield defender throughout his career, signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers in March. The career .260/.297/.409 hitter batted .315/.412/.622 with Triple-A Oklahoma City in 36 games.
The Dodgers worked extensively with Pillar in Spring Training to revamp his swing/approach. He called the changes “fairly drastic.”
“I got into a little less stressful environment in Triple-A, and I got to really find myself and figure out who I was as a baseball player, take a lot of things we worked on in spring,” Pillar said. “Spring wasn’t necessarily easy for me this year. It was constant tweaking with mechanics and thoughts and looking at different parts of the plate.
It didn’t give me a whole lot of freedom to just go out there and compete in the games, but I knew that was the process I needed to take to find the best version of myself.
“I’m pretty excited for this opportunity to come up here and prove to myself and prove to this league I’m a better version of myself.”
The 33-year-old batted .231/.277/.415 in 124 games last season with the Mets :

Grove made his Major League debut starting on May 15 and allowed four runs, none earned, in 3 2/3 innings against the Phillies. His last minor league start was May 21. Grove is an option for length out of the bullpen or as a starter.
The Dodgers have Tony Gonsolin starting today and Tyler Anderson going Sunday against the Diamondbacks. No starter has been announced for Monday when the Dodgers return home to play the Pirates.
