CLEVELAND — Workers at a second Cleveland Starbucks store are looking to form a union.
Employees at the 11623 Clifton Blvd. Starbucks will file Friday to form a union, according to Starbucks Workers United and staff from the store.
Workers at the Clifton location have been discussing unionization for some time, according to Chelsea Cruea, 24, a chef supervisor. When the W. 6th store filed to unionize, it catalyzed employees at other stores, including the Clifton staff.
“We think pay, hours, benefits, communication and decisions handed down could be improved. We’d like a voice in some of those things. Starbucks is still a pretty great company. We wouldn’t be fighting to unionize if we didn’t care about the job and the people we work with,” Cruea told Patch on Friday.
Workers United and employees looking to unionize sent a letter to Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson arguing that the company saw record profits in 2021, yet employee hours are being cut and wages are “unlivable.”
“We beg for simple adjustments like credit card tipping, yet district managers respond with blanket statements such as “Yeah that’s frustrating,” without ever enacting change or following up… We cannot pour from an empty cup… If we truly are partners and our well-being is important to you, you will side with us in this effort to unionize,” the letter read.
Starbucks Workers United is an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
A Starbucks spokesperson said the company has not yet received the petition to form a union at the Clifton Boulevard or Cleveland Heights stores, but the company will follow the National Labor Relations Board process once the petitions are filed.

“This is an opportunity to listen and learn from these partners,” the spokesperson told Patch.
Cruea said the Clifton Starbucks has already held “listening” sessions where company representatives shared information on unions — information she described as “corporate skewed.”
“[Attendees] get told things like, “If you unionize, we won’t be a family anymore.” They insinuate things will change drastically — but not for the better,” she said.
The Starbucks spokesperson confirmed the company did report “really strong” performance recently, but was skeptical of claims that hours were cut at any stores. Starbucks, like many other companies, has struggled recently to find adequate staffing, they said, and would instead be looking to increase hours for workers at many locations.
