NORWIN, PA — A Pennsylvania school board this week voted to remove mandatory streaming of a CNN-affiliated program in middle school classrooms, opting instead to let teachers decide whether they show the program or other videos on events such as Veterans Day or the attack on Pearl Harbor.
In a 5-4 vote, the Norwin school board banned mandatory daily broadcasts of CNN 10, an on-demand news program geared toward middle and high school students, TribLive reported. Typically, the 10-minute program was streamed in a student’s homeroom class.
CNN 10 was first added as required viewing in 2019. Previously, the district used similar programming from Channel One, TribLive reported.
Dozens of teachers attended this week’s meeting to protest the ban, according to TribLive reported. One teacher said CNN 10 supports the school district’s mission statement of civic engagement by the students; however, not every parent bought it.
Ashley Egan, a mom from North Huntingdon, said broadcasting CNN-affiliated programs is “feeding (her son) every day that CNN is a label you can trust.”
