PITTSBURGH, PA — A prominent Pittsburgh-area dentist killed his wife in 2016 while on safari in Africa in order to claim $4.8 million money from seven different insurance companies, a federal indictment states.
Lawrence Rudolph, 67, is charged with one count of foreign murder and one count of mail fraud.
Rudolph, the founder of the Three Rivers Dental chain in southwestern Pennsylvania, recently was taken into custody in Mexico, according to court documents.
Rudolph had indicated “by means of false and fraudulent pretense, representation and promise that Bianca Rudolph had died as the accidental discharge of a firearm when, in fact, she had been murdered,” the indictment states.
The mail fraud charge is related to insurance documents being delivered via Federal Express.

Bianca Rudolph died in October 2016 as she and her husband were packing to leave their hunting camp in Zambia, according to court documents. Bianca Rudolph was shot in the chest with a shotgun.
The criminal complaint states that Lawrence told police he was in the bathroom and Bianca was in the bedroom when the shooting occurred. Rudolph speculated that the gun was left loaded and accidentally discharged while Bianca was attempting to pack the gun into its case.
Police in Zambia ruled the death an accident. But the insurance companies involved began investigating the shooting, as did the FBI at the request of one of Bianca Rudolph’s friends.
According to the criminal complaint, the first insurance policy purchased by the couple was in 1987. Additional policies were updated and adjusted into 2016, with Lawrence Rudolph as the ultimate beneficiary.
The FBI interviewed a former Three Rivers Dental employee who said an office manager had confided in her that she had been involved in a long-term relationship with Rudolph for approximately 15 to 20 years. The former employee said that the woman — identified in the complaint as the girlfriend — had given Rudolph an ultimatum of one year to sell his practice and leave Bianca.
The FBI probe revealed that Rudolph and the girlfriend had traveled alone together to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in 2010; twice in 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015; in July 2016 before Bianca’s death; and in 2017 a few months afterward. The FBI also found that Rudolph and the girlfriend began living together in January 2017.
If convicted of the foreign murder charge, Rudolph faces a potential penalty of death or life imprisonment. The mail fraud charge carries a possible jail term of up to 20 years.
