Bangladesh has reported its highest single-day deaths from Covid-19 as the country struggles to deal with the mounting cases and deaths from the pandemic – with no end in sight.
The health authorities registered 264 deaths in the 24 hours to 8am on Thursday, which takes the nationwide death toll to 21,902, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The new record surpassed the previous high of 258 reported on July 27.
Dhaka counted 87 deaths, the highest among the eight divisions, followed by Chittagong with 56 fatalities.
Khulna division reported 35 deaths, while Sylhet reported 23, Rajshahi 19, Rangpur 18, Barisal 16, and Mymensingh 10.
During the same period, 12,744 people tested positive for the disease, taking the total number of infections to 1,322,654 in the country.
Dhaka logged 5,308 cases, the highest among the divisions followed by Chittagong with 3,357 and Barisal 858.

As many as 46,995 samples were tested across the country, with a positivity rate of 27.12%.
On the other hand, another 15,786 patients recovered from the infectious disease across the country, taking the total number of recovery to 1,156,943.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.66%.
Vaccination
Till Thursday, a total of 12,577 people received the second dose of Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine, taking the total number of fully vaccinated people to more than 4.33 million. Meanwhile, over 1.49 million people are waiting for the second dose.
Additionally, 223,288 people received the first dose of Sinopharm vaccine during the same period, taking the total to over 3.124 million till now, while 79,393 people received the second dose.
Meanwhile, a total of 50,255 people received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. And 1,182 people received the second dose of the vaccine till 8am on Thursday, taking the total to 5,376.

Also, 89,248 people received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine, taking the total number of recipients to a little over one million.
