The Hermit’s Way

According to the results of recent studies, people with high intelligence are distinguished by a less wide range of communication, and much less likely to seek interaction with other people. Interestingly, the choice of such a behavior strategy only benefits them.

According to evolutionary psychologists Satoshi Kanazawa and Norman Lee, for many people seeking happiness, the path of a “hermit in the wilderness” is not only acceptable, but also preferable — especially if they are distinguished by high intelligence.

In the course of the study, scientists found that, as a rule, people living in less densely populated areas feel happier. In addition, they found that the feeling of happiness is stronger the greater the percentage of our social interactions with those we love. And not with strangers, friends or colleagues.

What happens to smart people

Almost all participants in the study quite predictably reported that they feel happier the more often they interact with other people … with the exception of one of the categories of participants. For volunteers with the most developed intelligence, this effect was not only lower, but in many cases it was even the opposite.

“Smarter people report a decrease in life satisfaction as communication with friends increases,” the scientists concluded.

Carol Graham, who studies the economics of happiness, described this effect in one of her articles in the Washington Post. “Research shows (and I’m not surprised at all) that people with high intelligence and the ability to use it are much less likely to spend a lot of time on communication, since their attention is often focused on some other long-term goals.”

In other words, such an unsociable crank will respond to an offer to get out to the city and have a little fun that he has more important things to do. And he’s telling the truth.

The next degree of evolution

In interpreting the results of the study, evolutionary psychologists were based on the so-called “Savanna Theory”. According to this concept, it is easiest for modern people to find happiness in the same way that our distant ancestors found it. In those distant times, when our ancestors lived in the savannahs, the population density was incredibly low, and interpersonal interactions were extremely important for survival.

Although the results of the study partially confirm this theory, they also suggest that by now the most intellectually developed people in the process of evolution are beginning to lose the need for frequent social interactions. Instead, they direct their efforts to activities that make it possible to achieve the greatest success in the modern world — to develop their intellectual and financial capabilities. We need social interactions much less than our ancestors, and therefore the most developed people simply stopped putting them at the top of their priorities.
