Jessie Magdaleno (29-1) snapped a nearly two-year ring hiatus last month when he defeated Edy Valencia Mercado (19-7-6) at Resorts World Las Vegas via unanimous decision. The fight was streamed on ESPN+ on the Janibek Alimkhanuly-Danny Dignum undercard which was broadcast on ESPN’s flagship station.
The former super bantamweight champion won the fight comfortably. The final tallies were 80-72 on all three scorecards.
Even though he won every round, Magdaleno acknowledged that it wasn’t his best performance and expects to look much better in his next fight.
“I definitely felt the ring rust. I’m not happy with my performance but I’m definitely happy to be back in the ring,” Magdaleno stated.
Magdaleno’s manager Hector Fernandez de Cordova wants to make up for lost time and hopes to get his fighter back in the ring in the immediate future. If all goes as planned, it won’t be long before the Las Vegas native is back in a major fight.
“It was a two year break and he won good. I can’t lie to him nor to myself, I know there’s much to work on but the good thing is that we know there’s a lot to work on,” Fernandez de Cordova told BoxingScene.com.

Magdaleno captured the WBO super bantamweight title in 2016 when he upset future Hall of Famer Nonito Donaire. He had one successful defense before losing his title to Isaac Dogboe in 2018. He has now won four bouts in a row.
