HOUSTON, TX — Dozens of Houstonians turned out to the Mickey Leland Federal Building on Thursday to call for voting rights legislation, the prosecution of Capitol breachers and to remember those who died at and in the aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riots.
Thursday was the one-year anniversary of the insurrection, which temporarily halted the certification of President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
Last year, a mob of former President Donald Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol as Congress met to certify Biden’s electoral victory. Five people died either before, during or shortly after the event, including one person shot by Capitol police, another from a drug overdose and three who perished from natural causes.
Four officers who responded to the attack died by suicide within seven months.

Defend Democracy helped organize vigils and events across the country to mark the anniversary, including the Houston rally and voter registration drive.
Around 75 people were at the Houston event at its peak, Houston event organizer Brent Sullivan told Patch.
Sullivan was pleased with the turnout and the support from passerby. Texas Senate District 15 candidate Molly Cook and Andrea Beall, candidate for Judge of the 185th District Court, were in attendance along with several other candidates for public office, Sullivan said.
Protestors held signs for approximately one and a half hours with the messages ranging from supporting strengthening of voting rights to calling for the prosecution of Capitol rioters to refuting Trump’s baseless assertion that the 2020 election was stolen.
The insurrection and the passage of restrictive voting laws in the wake of the 2020 election represent a threat to democracy in the United States, Sullivan said.
The Texas Legislature recently passed SB1, a controversial election bill that prohibits several voting innovations introduced in Harris County during the Nov. 2020 election, including 24-hour locations and drive-thru voting options.

“Let’s not mince words; on Jan. 6, terrorists entered the Capitol,” Sullivan said. “The very next day, 147 Congresspeople voted to throw out the certified will of the people. In the year since then, we’ve seen the big lie the election was stolen used to put in place laws that make it harder to vote and easier to throw out the vote. … We are moving very rapidly toward minority government, and we’re supposed to be a democracy.
“We’re a group of people saying ‘Enough.’ We’re tired of the minority of people in this country running it in the interest of the minority.”
