In addition to the controversy over the LGBT scene, many believe that the storyline of the film “Lightyear” is far from expectations. Lightyear is an upcoming American computer-animated science fiction action film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
After inviting controversy because it contained LGBT elements in the film, “Lightyear” did not sell well in the market.
It didn’t stop there, the film also received negative reviews from critics and fans.
As is known, this film was banned in 14 countries because of LGBT cases. Many think that Disney is pushing its LGBT campaign too much, especially in cartoons that are intended for families or children.
As a result, many fans cannot watch this film, including in Indonesia which prohibits its screening.
In fact, “Lightyear movie” is one of the most anticipated films by fans. The success and big name of the “Toy Story” film franchise brought enthusiasm for many people to see this film in theaters.
In addition, Buzz Lightyear himself is one of the main characters in the iconic “Toy Story” film.
In terms of revenue, it turns out this film achieved results below expectations. Launching the LA Times, at its initial release in North America, this film only earned US $ 51 million.
The figure is quite disappointing because many film analysts estimate the film “Lightyear” could reach revenues of up to more than US $ 70 million during its opening weekend.
Internationally, this film grossed, US $ 85.6 million. For the size of a Disney Pixar animated film, this value is small.
The film failed to live up to analysts’ expectations of surpassing “Jurassic World: Dominion” which has now grossed more than US$500 million.
The film “Lightyear” tells the original story of the character who inspired the creation of the toy character Buzz Lightyear in the film “Toy Story”. Unfortunately, this storyline feels boring and cliche.
The film is only rated 5.2/10 on the IMDB site. This contrasts with the scores of the “Toy Story” films which are above 7.5.
“I watched this film with my 6 year old son, he fell asleep, and I almost (asleep too). Boring, inconsistent and worst of all. Not funny. What’s the point?” wrote one viewer in the IMDB review column.
“Nostalgia only (I) felt in the first 10 minutes. The rest, the story flows somewhere and it doesn’t feel right,” wrote another viewer.
Launching Screen Rant, the storyline adopted by “Lightyear” tends to run away from the story about the Space Ranger that many fans have known in the movie “Toy Story”.
This film seems to present a completely new story, but uses “old” characters.
In addition, the presence of Buzz Lightyear in a human figure is considered to make this film not “special” or like cartoons in general.
Not to mention, because the story of this film takes the point of view of human characters, of course the toy characters of Buzz’s friends in “Toy Story” such as Woody, Rex, Bo Peep, Hamm, Slinky Dog, Mr & Mrs Potato do not appear in the story. In fact, in the movie “Toy Story” it was the characters who stole the attention of fans.
It seems that Disney is too bold to explore in this new film. Will “Lightyear” be a flop this year?
