VIENNA, VA — Women-owned brands are prominent at the recently-opened Trace the Zero Waste store in Vienna, but owner Mala Persaud will make an extra effort to promote them in March.
For Women’s History Month in March, Persaud wanted to make an effort to promote women-owned businesses. That’s why she is hosting pop-ups of women-owned brands on dates throughout the month.
“So many of the products we sell at Trace are women-owned businesses,” Persaud told Patch. “The majority of them are small, women-owned businesses.”
Persaud said the pop-ups support businesses that have a demand for products but cannot support a storefront. Like the participating businesses, Trace the Zero Waste Store started as a pop-up.
“That’s how I grew my business. I just rented a table at festivals,” said Persaud.

Here is the schedule for pop-ups:
- March 5: 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Noonday Collection, featuring jewelry and accessories made by artisans from around the world
- March 12: 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Compost Crew, a compost service owned by Anne Used
- March 20: 12 p.m.-4 p.m. Roots n’ Shoots, locally grown microgreens by Paula Burdette
- March 27: 12 p.m.-4 p.m. Mudtree Designs pottery by Kristy Schulenberg
The other major event planned in March is the observation of Earth Hour on March 26. Earth Hour is a worldwide event encouraging people to turn all lights off for one hour from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on March 26. Persaud, who recently joined the town’s Conservation and Sustainability Commission, said the Town of Vienna has committed to turning the lights off at Town Hall for Earth Hour.
Persaud encouraged other Vienna residents to get involved and perhaps turn it into a neighborhood event.
“All they have to do is turn off the lights in the house for one hour,” said Persaud.
