Top Gun 2, aka Top Gun: Maverick, is almost here after what has felt like endless delays for even the most patient of fans.
At one point, the sequel was set to come out in July 2019, but now it seems to definitely be flying into cinemas in May 2022. Don’t worry, we crossed every digit and touched every piece of wood around us when we typed that.
Paramount released another new trailer for the movie on March 29, 2022 to hype up the release, so we’d like to think that meant another delay isn’t in the works.
Don’t worry though, because in September 2020 star Jon Hamm had been promising that it was worth the wait and that it was “everything you hope it’s going to be”. Top Gun fans will be the judge of that though.

So as we all wait a couple more months to see it, here’s everything you need to know about Top Gun: Maverick.
Top Gun 2 release date: When will Top Gun Maverick be out in cinemas?
Let’s cut to the chase before we get into all the delays. Top Gun: Maverick is currently scheduled to be released in UK cinemas on May 25, 2022 and in US cinemas on May 27, 2022.
According to The Wall Street Journal, both Netflix and Apple asked Paramount if the studio would sell the movie to them for a streaming debut. However, Paramount has stuck it out on a theatrical release, which is great to see.
If that Top Gun date holds firm, it means the sequel will arrive on our screens a little under three years from its original July 12, 2019 date. A delay of an entire year followed, before that date was moved forward slightly to June 24, 2020 in the US and July 17, 2020 in the UK.
However, the sequel was then hit with another delay to December 23, 2020, and that wasn’t the end of it as Paramount then pushed the sequel back to July 2, 2021 only for it to be delayed again to November 19, 2021.
Sadly that wasn’t the final delay, but (hopefully) now we’re finally at the end of the road.
Filming on the sequel took place from May 2018 to June 2019. Basically, a lifetime ago, so good luck to the cast on remembering what happened when it comes to the promotional trail.
Top Gun 2 trailer: Watch the Top Gun Maverick trailer here!
The first trailer was released at Comic-Con International on July 18, 2019, which now feels like an entirely different world.
When the trailer was finally released, fans were quick to spot similarities between it and the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, citing specific shots that seemed almost identical to Episode VII’s trailer.
The second trailer landed on December 16, 2019 as an early festive treat for Top Gun fans. There’s also a fan-made LEGO version of the trailer that is just as incredible as it sounds.

At CinemaCon in August 2021, the first 13 minutes of the movie were shown to audiences, as well as a new trailer. According to Deadline, the opening sees Maverick defy the Admiral and fly to Mach 10.
He reaches Mach 10, but the plane soon explodes. Fortunately, Maverick survives otherwise it’d be a very short movie.
As mentioned above, another trailer was released on March 29, 2022 and gave us more plot details, as well as a long-awaited first glimpse at the return of Val Kilmer’s Iceman (albeit only in photo form in the trailer).
Top Gun 2 cast: Who’s starring in Top Gun Maverick?
It’s been more than 30 years since they faced off to be the best of the best, battling for the title of ‘Top Gun’ at the US Navy Fighter Weapons School in Miramar. But Top Gun 2 will definitely see rivals Maverick (Cruise) and Iceman (Val Kilmer) reunite.
Director Joseph Kosinski is keeping tight-lipped over how their relationship has changed in the intervening years though.
“The rivalry and relationship between Iceman and Maverick is one of those things that makes that first film so iconic,” he said. “It’s a relationship that is important to the Top Gun franchise and as a fan I would want to see how it’s evolved.”
In an interview with Total Film in March 2022, Kosinski called the return of Kilmer a “huge, huge get”, but still remained tight-lipped on what we can expect.
“To get to work with an actor of that calibre, to see the chemistry, the camaraderie between him and Tom, and to have those two characters reunite in this film, was a really special moment, and one of my favourite parts of the film,” he enthused.
But how has Maverick changed in the decades since we last saw him? Well, he hasn’t exactly.
“In so many ways he’s still the guy that we remember from the first Top Gun,” Kosinski told Empire. “He keeps that old Ninja under a tarp in the hangar and still wears those Ray-Ban aviators. He’s the best at what he does, and he’s given his whole life to aviation.
“But that has come at a personal cost, and Maverick has to confront some things from his past and reconcile with them. It’s a rite-of-passage story, much like the first film was. But this is a man now at a different stage of life.”
Anthony Edwards isn’t ruling out a Ghost Goose plot, but at least if we don’t get that, we do have Miles Teller appearing as Goose’s son Bradley Bradshaw.
In the latest trailer, it seems as though Bradley isn’t the biggest fan of Maverick. “My dad believed in you, I’m not going to make the same mistake,” he tells him. Ouch.
One person who won’t be back from the original is Michael Ironside as Lieutenant Commander Rick ‘Jester’ Heatherly, with the actor putting it down to the fact that his relationship with producer Jerry Bruckheimer apparently isn’t the greatest.
Neither will Kelly McGillis as Charlotte Blackwood, aka Charlie, as producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Total Film that her arc was “left back in the first one”.
Some fans suspect the funeral scene depicted in the trailer might be that of Commander Mike ‘Viper’ Metcalf (Tom Skerritt). Say it ain’t so!
After being rumoured for the role of Goose’s son, Glen Powell did sign up for the movie in a mystery role named Hangman.
The sequel will also star Jennifer Connelly as the movie’s female lead, playing a single mother who runs a local bar near the Navy base. She’ll be joined by Jon Hamm’s vice admiral Cyclone and Ed Harris, who’s playing Maverick’s supervisor, a so-far unnamed rear admiral.
A new pilot named Fritz will be played by The Good Place star Manny Jacinto, and a busy cast also features the likes of Monica Barbaro, Chelsea Harris, Charles Parnell, Jay Ellis, Bashir Salahuddin, Danny Ramirez and Lewis Pullman.
Top Gun 2 plot: What’s Top Gun Maverick about?
The official plot synopsis for the sequel is as follows:
“After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him,” it reads.
“When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialised mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt Bradley Bradshaw, call sign ‘Rooster’, the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt Nick Bradshaw, aka ‘Goose’.
“Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.”
The world might have changed since the first movie for Maverick, but expect him to still be undertaking intense flights, ones so big that the crew had to ask the Navy for permission to film one of the most extreme stunts.
In case you didn’t believe the hype about the lack of CGI, the producers released this breathtaking video:

Bruckheimer added: “What’s different about this movie is that [in the original Top Gun] we put the actors in the F-14s and we couldn’t use one frame of it, except some stuff on Tom, because they all threw up.
“It’s hysterical to see their eyes roll back in their heads. So everything was done on a gimbal. But in this movie, Tom wanted to make sure the actors could actually be in the F-18s.”
Miles Teller described the preparation for the movie as like being in “Tom Cruise boot camp”, so we can expect incredible action and flying sequences that might just be worth the extended wait for the sequel.
“We were all mini Toms making this movie,” he told Total Film. “We were getting in killer shape. And also for the stunts and stuff that Tom does in movies, it’s usually a very specific type of training.
“You’re not just going into the gym and lifting some weights. We did flight training for three months before we started filming… We got put through the wringer.”
