Schoharie, New York
One of the worst crashes in recent American history involved a horrifying limousine wreck in New York state in 2018. In the tragedy, the limo driver ran a stop sign at high speed and hurled into a ravine.
The wreck killed 20 people and was the worst single-vehicle accident in more than 10 years. Unfortunately, no one in the vehicle wore a seat belt.
The driver did not have the proper driver’s license, and the vehicle failed several safety inspections. We hope this tragedy leads to a federal law requiring all limousines to be fitted with seat belts.
Wilmer, Texas
Hurricane Rita hit the Gulf Coast in 2005, and that event became a tragedy for 25 nursing home evacuees. Because of the storm, the nursing home was cleared out, and all residents were sent to Dallas.

The bus suffered a flat tire two hours west of Dallas. The bus filled with smoke, and most of the passengers could not move on their own. Next, the bus exploded, killed 25, and injured many others.
Portland, Maine
One of the worst car accidents in recent history involved speeding when an SUV in Maine crashed at more than 100 MPH. The vehicle ran off the road in the 2002 tragedy and smashed into a tree. The SUV was obliterated, and seven people died, including four children. Never have the dangers of reckless speeding been better illustrated than in this horror.
Nashville, Tennessee
In December 1990, on I-75, fog covered the highway and caused a horrifying 70-vehicle pileup. There were warning signs posted for miles, but foggy conditions got rapidly worse, and not enough vehicles slowed down.
The wreckage from the multiple crashes spread for a mile and caused 13 deaths. Car fires made it exponentially worse, and dozens of fire companies answered the call. Survivors recalled that the crashes sounded like bombs repeatedly dropping as cars kept smashing into each other.
Since the tragedy, Tennessee has implemented a better fog warning system with sensors that can change freeway signs in minutes to tell drivers to slow down.
Richmond, Virginia
In February 2000, the temperature dropped to 28 degrees, and a terrible snow storm caused a whiteout on Interstate 95. An inch of snow fell in only five minutes. What happened next was the worst car pileup in state history, with an incredible 117 cars.
Fortunately, the accident only killed one person, but 31 were hurt. A massive effort by first responders rescued most motorists and got the highway open in only 12 hours.
Randolph, New Hampshire
In June 2019, a terrible accident happened in this small town that involved a pickup truck and 10 motorcycles. The accident was so devastating that the rural highway was shut down for 12 hours.
The result of the violent crash was seven dead and three crippled with severe injuries. Crash witnesses saw motorcycle wreckage spread over hundreds of feet.
As you can see, these six tragic auto accidents were devastating. It’s essential to drive safely and always wear your seat belt. But if the worst happens and you’re caught in a bad accident, remember to consult a personal injury attorney.
