There was a time when practically everybody either knew somebody who actively played FarmVille on Facebook or was that person themselves. For a few years, Zynga’s Flash-based application dominated the games on Facebook, holding the number one spot for over two years, from 2009 to 2011. So when Zynga announced that FarmVille and FarmVille 2 would be shutting down when Facebook stopped support for Flash games in December 2020, many dedicated fans were disappointed. But Zynga assured players that the company would develop FarmVille 3 for mobile.
FarmVille was truly a social phenomenon when it debuted on Facebook and Microsoft’s MSN Games in 2009. At the peak of its popularity, it reached nearly 35 million daily active users, spurring the release of a briefly available mobile version of the game in 2010 and FarmVille 2 in 2012. The games were so popular that they featured in-game partnerships with a number of major companies like McDonald’s, 7-Eleven, Farmers Insurance, and even Lady Gaga. And FarmVille is a 2021 candidate for entry into the National Museum of Play’s Video Game Hall of Fame.
Zynga has released a “sneak peak” trailer for FarmVille 3, which will be released on mobile at an as-yet unannounced date. FarmVille 3 will allow players to build a farm from scratch, grow crops, and keep a variety of animals. The game will feature the new ability to breed and nurture baby animals from more than 150 unique varieties, including everything from horses and pigs to alpacas and arctic foxes. Additional information about the game will hopefully be forthcoming as launch day approaches.
Zynga currently offers a game called FarmVille 3 – Animals on the Google Play Store for Android and the App Store for iOS. It is not clear how this differs from FarmVille 3, but in FarmVille 3 – Animals players can breed, raise, and sell a variety of animals in order to raise funds for improvements and expansion of their farm. The game features hundreds of decorations, buildings, and even outfits for hired farmhands. These farmhands consist of a range of specialized workers like lumberjacks and cooks who can be leveled up to unlock new skills and recipes.
